KTRU EP, Demos, etc.

Wednesday, 13 January, 2010

Holy shnikes, have we been busy folk.  Played several shows in the last couple months, wrote some songs, and last week I went in and put down 17 demos so that we could start working on an album.  Suffice it to say that they won’t all make it, but we have plans for most of them, spaced across a few releases.

I also spent an entire day hand-screening the covers of our KTRU EP, a collection of four songs that we played live on the air of Rice University’s most excellent 91.7 FM KTRU.  My fantastic brother David Brubaker mastered these tracks so’s that they’ll sound good next to all of those songs already in your iTunes playlist.  The covers are double-screened with brown and glow-in-the-dark blue ink, and the EP is hand-numbered to 98 copies.  You can pick up the EP from us personally for $5 or buy the tracks over at http://prairiecadets.bandcamp.com for $3.  Heck, you can even buy the physical copy of it there and I’ll mail it to you with a handwritten thank you note.

We don’t have any shows lined up at the moment because we’re trying out a new drummer this week.  Adam and I are pretty excited, to say the least.

You can have a listen to a few of the new songs/demos over at our Virb [www.virb.com/prairiecadets].  Marble Heart was recorded in my kitchen on a few quick and scrappy takes, with half a bottle of merlot on New Year’s Eve.  The others were done in two sessions with Taylor Lee of The Literary Greats / Finnegan.  Like I said, I went in last week and put down 17 demos, just guitar and vocals, to have foundations of all of our songs with which we could work.  Go listen, and let us know what you think.

See you soon.  Thanks for all the support.

More News.

Saturday, 29 August, 2009

So we haven’t updated in a while, our apologies.  Here’s some things Adam and I have been doing.

We played a show at The Mink on the 16th, with some fantastic folks: Finnegan, The Julys, and Benjamin Wesley.  We tried to record the set, but there were some sound complications and we don’t really have anything useable.  However, my dad [I didn't even know he was coming to the show] shot a video of our last song, Tan Like Leather.  It’s pretty dark, because that’s how The Mink is, but the audio is decent.  You can find both the video and an .mp3 of the song on our MySpace and Virb.

Before David left for college, we set up his drums in our kitchen and recorded the foundations for demos of seven songs.  Hopefully we’ll have some full working demos down next week.

I’ve finished chopping the Wurlitzer into two separate pieces, which will make gigging with the piano a lot easier.  If you see us in the future, you’ll meet Dr. Teeth, my fuzzy orange speaker box.

Aaaand, we’ve been writing even more songs.  We wrote two new ones this week in practice: Radio Howl and Get Off, Get Off Quick.  The first one was born on my recent trip to Nashville, on my brother’s beaten, out-of-tune piano, the second one we whipped up during practice.

We’re in the hunt for another drummer, and once we get that figured out we’ll announce some more shows.  We’ve also been brainstorming a Texas tour in December.  There’s a lot going on, and we’re quite excited.

Brewing More Than Coffee…

Sunday, 12 July, 2009

We’re pretty excited here on the prairie.  Our shows at The Mink and Avant Garden went pretty well last month, minus a couple technical difficulties.  If you’re one of the folks that came and saw us play, thanks!  We’ve got a couple more shows coming up soon.  The first is a house show at The Majestic on July 17th, with Cedar Boy Bailey [Sergio of Buxton], Gretchen Schmaltz, Sara Van Buskirk and Joseph LeMay.  The second show is at Avant Garden on July 25th, but we haven’t finalized a lineup on it yet.  We should have details for you very soon.

We’re also planning out our first release, a 7 inch EP called Celebrity.  It’ll feature three songs, Free ?uestlove, Elton John Chord, and I’m No Billy Joel.  Hopefully [fingers crossed] we’ll have it sometime in the fall.

That’s about it for now.

Hello World!

Thursday, 11 June, 2009

Hey everyone! Welcome to the site which, as you can see, is now live. Prairie Cadets is now in full swing, meaning we are writing, laying down demos, have a set assembled, and are booking shows. Most of all, we’re excited. We’ve got a nice 6-song set worked up and ready to go, and we’re eager to share it with you.

We’ll have more details about shows really soon, but I can tell you for certain that we’ll have a show at Avant Garden [411 Westheimer] before the month of June is finished.

Also, my brother David Brubaker will be playing drums with us this summer. David was in local acts Adlai and Depths and the Dauntless, and is in the process of getting a degree in sound engineering from Belmont University in Nashville. Practicing with him has been phenomenal, and we’re really looking forward to playing shows.

Finally, you can stay up to date on what we’re doing by adding this feed to the reader of your choice using the Entries RSS link over on the right.
